Are you a parent worried about the recent changes you have seen in your teen?

Is your teen having a difficult time coping with the stressors surrounding friends, boyfriends, school, family relationships, changes in the family or trauma and abuse?

The teen years can be such a challenging time - not just for parents, but for the teens themselves. They are at a point between childhood and adulthood, but do not fit into either category. Their hormones are going crazy, they have to deal with peer, dating and societal pressures and it’s also the time when they feel they have to decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives. No wonder at times they shut themselves away in their rooms.

Sometimes teens need to talk with someone who is outside of their circle of friends and family. I offer teens a safe place where they can confide their fears and hopes, make sense of their feelings and create goals for their future. My work with teens include both talking and creative types of therapy. I have found that many teens enjoy expressing themselves and their feelings through creative means. Some creative activities that I use with teens include art, poetry, music and role-playing.

The teen years is often a time of a communication breakdown with their parents. I meet with teens and parents together to help them improve this communication and develop healthier, more satisfying relationships. Please see the
Family Therapy page for more information on this type of counseling.
I also meet regularly with parents to find out what is happening in their teen’s lives. I see myself and parents as allies working together to help their teens. Additionally, I offer support to parents to help them deal with different types of parenting issues and concerns.

These are some of the issues in which I can help your teen:

Divorce and Separation - Adjusting to changes in family and environment
Self Esteem - Learning to feel good about himself/herself
Abuse and Trauma - Coping and surviving after abuse or another trauma
Grief and Loss - Dealing with death and loss
Anxiety and Stress - Creating empowering ways to handle life’s stressors
Social Relationships - Getting along better with friends and boyfriend

If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.

Don't laugh at a youth for his affectations; he is only trying on one face after another to find a face of his own.
